Isaiah 49:1-7.

In today’s passage, we read, “Before I was born the LORD called me; from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name” (v. 1). The Lord also said, “You are my servant” (v. 3), and, “I will also make you a light for the Gentiles [nations], that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth” (v. 6).

Who is this person of whom Isaiah prophetically spoke? It is Messiah Jesus of whom an angel revealed to Joseph, while Jesus was yet in Mary’s womb: “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).

Years later, Messiah Jesus said to the crowds, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). Yet He also told His disciples, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). The lighting up of the nations with God’s salvation, then, is a shared mission. Before He returned to heaven, Jesus commissioned His followers: “You will be my witnesses . . . to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
