A Call for Truth

August 13th, 2025

Ephesians 4:25-32.

Ephesians was written to encourage new believers. These new believers needed guidance and had to learn what it means to be a Christian. In many ways, their new belief was contrary to the culture they were living in. Amazingly, this encouragement came from the apostle Paul while he was in prison.

Paul starts his lesson to the Ephesians by first sharing some generalizations about what it means to be a follower of Christ. For example, Paul explained that when one accepts Christ, they “put on a new self” (v. 24). Paul, knowing this is a difficult concept, gives specific examples of changes that must be made to become a new creation. The first thing that must go is lying (v. 25).

Most of us have been taught since an early age that lying is bad. However, the culture that these new Ephesian believers were from strongly believed that a lie was better than possibly hurting someone with the truth. Paul had to teach against their known culture and help new believers understand that all lying needed to stop. Christians are a reflection of Christ, and we should build healthy relationships through truth.
