Walking With God

July 19th, 2025

Hebrews 11:1-7.

What is faith? Is it belief, knowledge, trust, or something else? This passage is the beginning of an interesting engagement with the faith of some prominent characters of the Bible. It can help us understand faith better and draw us nearer to the God in whom our faith resides.

It is likely we’ve read the story of Cain and Abel from Genesis 4. The looming question is, why was God pleased with Abel’s sacrifice but not Cain’s? Might Hebrews 11:4 offer us the insight that it wasn’t about the sacrifice at all, but about Abel’s faith? Other passages, such as Psalm 51:16-17 and Hosea 6:6, find agreement with this. Sacrifices don’t mean as much to God as the posture of our hearts.

The stories of Enoch and Noah come to a similar conclusion. Hebrews tells us Enoch pleased God, which might find explanation in Genesis 5:24, where we read that Enoch walked with God. Likewise, Noah’s faith is reflected in 6:9, which describes him as righteous and walking with God.

What if faith is less about belief as intellectual assent, and more about walking, or relating, with God? How will you walk with God today?
