Carried In Christ
July 17th, 2025
1 Thessalonians 5:1-11.
The day of the Lord is a concept well known in the Old Testament. Words like those in Isaiah 13:9, Joel 2:31, and Amos 5:18 paint a scary and morbid picture. This might be why some Christians have interpreted the day of the Lord as frightening, elevating a narrative of fear and condemnation. This is unfortunate since the narrative of Scripture offers a much greater emphasis to grace, love, and hope. Today’s passage is an example of that latter narrative.
We must not eliminate the sobering narrative of judgment, but we must recognize that it is only to be viewed together with God’s grace and love, which gives us hope! Even when our faith is not strong, we can be carried in the faith and love of Christ.
The words of Galatians 2:16-20 and Romans 3:22-24 echo those of verses 8-10 in today’s passage. The love and faith of Christ save us through God’s grace so that we have hope of continuing to live with Him (v. 10).
As we are carried in Christ’s faith and love, we receive them into ourselves so that we live lives of faith, hope, and love, becoming an avenue of grace to those around us!
