Block of Wood

July 10th, 2025

Isaiah 45:20-25.

Fictional shows, documentaries, and media coverage involving trials in court have gripped the attention of millions of viewers. In our passage, we read of a trial unlike anything we can watch on television today. The “fugitives from the nations” are summoned to gather together and appear before the Lord (v. 20).

The Lord calls these fugitives to account for their worship of idols made of wood. Those fugitives are then radically invited to turn from their idols and to the Lord to be saved.

Imagine verses 23-24 rewritten: “Before a block of wood every knee will bow; by a block of wood every tongue will swear. They will say of the block of wood, ‘In the block of wood alone are deliverance and strength.'” As silly as this sounds, we have to remember that an idol is anything or anyone we make the object of our worship.

Take time today to humbly reflect on the things or people that threaten to receive your worship and imagine bowing before and swearing by them. Repent and ask for forgiveness from the one and only God who is worthy of our praise and devotion.
