Holy to the Lord

July 9th, 2025

Zechariah 14:16-21.

Do you ever forget whether or not you have worn a piece of clothing? How do you determine if it is clean or not? If you are like me, you give it a good sniff to test it out.

A key role of the Israelite priests was to continually distinguish between clean and unclean, the holy and the common. This job was a lot more serious than resolving a laundry mishap: not approaching the holy and the common in accordance with the Lord’s commands could result in punishment as severe as death (Leviticus 10:3, 10; 2 Samuel 6:7).

At the end of Zechariah, we see a beautiful glimpse of a coming day when the distinction between holy and common is no longer needed; the most ordinary of items, such as the pots we cook with, will be holy and set apart for the Lord. Common objects like bells on horses will bear the inscription once reserved for the headpieces of the high priests alone: HOLY TO THE LORD (v. 20; Exodus 39:27-31).

Even now we are called to treat everything we have as the Lord’s and to offer our very selves as holy, living sacrifices (Romans 12:1).
