Take Time

July 5th, 2025

Ecclesiastes 12:9-14..

Ecclesiastes 12 holds the closing remarks of Ecclesiastes. It shares that “the Teacher” (v. 9), who wrote Ecclesiastes, took time and searched for the right words. Because we live in a culture that is quick to speak, we often don’t think about how taking time to find the right words is a godly discipline, but it is.

It is wise to take time to find the right words, to find the truthful words, to find the godly words. It is wise not to rush to speech, but rather to practice speech that takes its time.

When the teacher found the right words, he wrote them down, and the things he wrote were “upright and true.” How might our world change if we practiced this? Would this change how we interact with social media, which is for many of us the place where we write publicly the most?

Maybe we need to ask before sitting down to write a status, an email, or any other form of public communication: “Is what I’m about to write upright and true? Do I need to search for the right words a little bit longer?”
