Overcome Evil with Good

June 29th, 2025

Romans 12:9-21

Romans 12:9-21 is focused on honoring one another. It’s a theme throughout Scripture. It’s a mark of what it means to be a child of God, to care for one another well. This care is rooted in the overflow of love that God has for us. We love others, because God loves us.

The way we love others is through caring for them. We are called to not only care for others whom we think deserve goodness, but for all people, including enemies. We care for our enemies in a way that they wouldn’t care for us—not out of some kind of continual oppression for ourselves, but because it exposes the ridiculousness of their oppression. It “heap[s] burning coals” on their heads.

It is easy to let evil overcome us to the point of inaction, but verse 21 tells us to instead “overcome evil with good.” We are to care for others, all others, with the same love that God has for us, and when we do that, we are overcoming evil with goodness.
