Choose Righteousness

Proverbs 16:1-12

Proverbs is a book of wise sayings. It is an image of an older person bestowing on a younger one the knowledge they have gained throughout life in order to help the younger person make good decisions.

Proverbs 16:1-12 focuses on the ways a person lives. The focus is on being a righteous person and aligning plans with the plans of God. We often long for an image of aligning our plans with God’s that gives us a multitude of material blessings, but we see a different image when we get to verse 8.

Instead of material gain, we see that it is better to be a righteous person with little than to gain a lot through injustice. This is a different way of living in the world.

Instead of striving to get ahead by any means necessary, instead of cheating or treating others poorly, we are called to be righteous, even if it means living with less, because that is ultimately for our good and what God calls us to.
