Ecclesiastes 9:11-18

Wise words are meant to be listened to, but they are often ignored. We hear the words of the elders as applicable only to their generation but far removed from our busy lives. However, if we listen and think, we will find a source of wisdom that is readily applicable to our lives. Words of wisdom are not to be forgotten or ignored.

Today’s passage tells the story of a poor man who gave advice to save a city, but then he and his wisdom were forgotten. No doubt others took the credit for the wisdom that won the victory.

The wise person speaks quietly, does not shout, and knows when to speak and when to remain quiet. There is wisdom in listening. Words that sink into our ears (minds and hearts) are whispered, not shouted.

Society today tells us that its wisdom is better than that of more spiritual sources. However, there is wisdom in silencing the noise of the crowd and paying attention to the quiet voices.

Seek wisdom even when it seems undervalued. True strength lies in wise and righteous living.
