1 Corinthians 1:18-26
Todd is a geologist—more specifically, a micropaleontologist who works in biostratigraphy, using fossils to describe rocks in the subsurface. Huh? If, like me, you didn’t recognize any of those words, fear not. And if “paleontologist” caught your ear and you thought, “It has something to do with dinosaurs”—well, it doesn’t, much to the chagrin of every kid whose eyes get wide when they realize they are meeting a real paleontologist. As he puts it, “He’s not the cool kind.”
He works among Ph.D.’s; they’re smart and good at what they do, but they often miss God with all their knowledge and know-how. They can explain and theorize the how and perhaps even the when, but they don’t know the why or who. In seeing these beautiful fossils, Todd, referencing Psalm 19, often says, “All creation speaks of Thee.”
Degrees and experience can teach a lot. Accolades and accomplishments can recognize excellence. Yet, all the knowledge and trophies in the world add up to nothing without Jesus.
