Utters Not Mutters

Psalm 37:30-40
Have you ever had a mentor—a teacher, pastor, or friend from whom wisdom just seemed to ooze? I once had the pleasure of working with a pastor who balanced stretching, obedient faith with common sense, and justice with mercy. Kindness, intention, and wisdom were his default. He wasn’t one to mutter, but what he uttered was good.
How did that happen? Certainly not by accident! It grew from his relationship with the Lord, empowered by the Spirit, enhanced in prayer. It showed in the ways he (and his wife) practiced faithful obedience, outlandish generosity, and steadfast hope.
How do we make that a reality in our lives? The psalmist tells us, and it starts with God’s laws being in our hearts (see Deuteronomy 6; Matthew 5—7), to “hope in the LORD and keep his way” (v. 34), and to take refuge in Him.
Just like my dear pastor-friend, we won’t always get it right, but as we practice, pray, and lean in, I think we’ll find ourselves getting it right more often than not. May we learn to live in God’s wisdom and be utterers and not mutterers.
