Wise in Whose Eyes?
May 30th, 2025
Proverbs 3:1-8
Similar to boasting about one’s humility, claiming to be wise in our own eyes is a great irony. If we believe we can be our own judge of whether we are living wisely, we have completely forgotten who created wisdom and gifted it to us in the first place. When we lose sight of what is wise in God’s eyes, we harm ourselves, but we also do damage to our surrounding community. Our perspective is skewed; we cannot distinguish between what is wise and what is foolish on our own!
Instead, we are called to seek God’s wisdom. Only then can we make decisions that will result in the just, right, and fair community mentioned in the book’s introduction and overcome the temptation to be self-reliant.
Seeking to be wise in God’s eyes and not our own also impacts our physical bodies.
It is utterly exhausting to depend on ourselves instead of God, and it most certainly leads to destruction. When we trust and fear the Lord, we can begin to heal from our self-reliance and receive the nourishment we so desperately need.
