Wisdom of the Heart
May 28th, 2025
Proverbs 2:9-15
We often take for granted that we have access to a wealth of knowledge about every last crevice of our bodies. Medical professionals and scientists can use advanced equipment to take detailed images that reveal the complete makeup of the human body down to the smallest parts of the smallest cells.
The ancient Israelites’ knowledge of the body was much more limited. We often associate the heart with emotions, but for Proverbs’ original audience, the heart was at the center of all life. Because they had little concept of the brain or how it functioned, the heart represented not just their emotions but their thoughts and wills as well. Everything they thought, everything they did, and every decision they made flowed from the heart (4:23).
The Lord’s wisdom that penetrates the whole person through the heart is not forced on us; we can choose to follow the crooked ways of the wicked and walk in darkness. God will never make us walk down the path that gives abundant life, yet He will always freely invite us to begin or continue walking down it.
