The Simple and The Wise
May 26th, 2025
Proverbs 1:1-7
Take a minute to think back on some of your glaring mistakes from your younger years. What would you have done differently in light of what you know now?
The opening verses of Proverbs take the guesswork out of discovering the purpose and audience of its contents. The goal is for the readers of Proverbs to gain wisdom, instruction, and understanding, and to do what is right, just, and fair. The focal audience is the young and simple who are ignorant of the complexities of life they will soon face.
But there is another audience mentioned: the wise and discerning are invited to add to their learning and gain guidance.
Everyone, whether simple or possessing a wealth of godly understanding, benefits from the continued guidance found in these pages. Wherever we find ourselves on this wisdom-gaining journey, our foundation must be the fear of the Lord. This fear does not leave us hiding in a corner but is rooted in reverence of, respect for, and devotion to God.
We are all called to have this humble posture before God, simple and wise alike.
