Pilgrims On a Journey

Psalm 133:1-3
Going up to the great festivals in Jerusalem must have been a thrilling time for the ancient Hebrews. The dusty roads were filled with groups of travelers, carrying their offerings and joining their voices in the “Songs of Ascent” (Psalms 120—134).
There was a joyful unity in their journey. They came from various tribes, villages, and cities, yet they all were bound for Jerusalem and the temple of the living God. They were also unified in their purpose: to worship the God of Abraham, Moses, and David. Their hearts and voices united in prayer and praise. The journey changed them and how they related to one another. Tribal rivalries and grudges were forgotten. Families were reunited. Both burdens and resources were shared.
Israel was born on a journey from slavery to freedom, yet when they settled down and built walls, they began to drift apart.
The people of God are ever on a journey. This world is not our home. It is on the journey that we discover, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!”
