Who Cares?

May 23rd, 2025

Acts 20:25-32

“Military organizations have a “chain of command.” Governments have departments and agencies. Businesses have owners, managers, and workers. Churches have pastors, boards, and members. Somebody has to care. That’s the job of an “overseer.”

The apostle Paul cared deeply for the church in Ephesus. He had invested years, often at personal risk, to see the congregation established and growing in mission. That is why he made a detour on his trip to Jerusalem. He wanted to meet one last time with the Ephesian leaders.

A true leader is an overseer, someone “charged with the duty of seeing that things done by others are done rightly” (Strong’s Concordance, 1985). The church needs leaders with a clear focus on Christ’s call, a personal commitment to serve, and who clearly teach “the whole will of God” (v. 27). Overseers cultivate a close relationship with the Holy Spirit, seeking the Spirit’s guidance in all they do (vv. 22-23).

An overseer is not just a name on a diploma or a line on an organizational chart. An overseer cares.
