To Whom Are You Talking?

May 10th, 2025

Luke 11:1-13

In the film Wizard of Oz, Dorothy travels to Emerald City in order to request help from the “Great Oz” in order to return home to Kansas. Dorothy and her newfound friends arrive in Emerald City, only to be told to come back the next day. Dorothy was astonished to discover that the Great Oz was merely a man behind a curtain.

Knowing whom you are talking to and what abilities they have in their power can make or break a situation. How often have you wanted to simply talk to a “real person” when you call customer service? We want someone we know is real, able to empathize with us, and make things happen. This was not the case with the “Wizard of Oz” but is certainly the case with God.

When we communicate with God, we can know that God is real, God is able to understand us, and God is powerful. Luke records that Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (v. 9). When we approach God, we can know whom we are talking with and we can rely on God to act in our best interest.
