Romans 8:1-8
I remember my first piano lessons as a small kindergartner—walking up to the front door of my teacher’s house, sitting at her huge piano. For years—from elementary through college—I took lessons every year. There was much music, so many lessons, yearly recitals, offertories in children’s church and “big” church. I became pretty good at sight reading music.
It wasn’t until one of my college professors talked to me about the difference between playing the music correctly and playing musically that I finally understood a piece of being a pianist that I hadn’t yet embraced. Someone can play a piece of music entirely “correctly,” without a blemish, and still be missing the point of the music. When that person embraces the music and plays with feeling and wholeness, then that person is playing musically.
We can live a “clean” life, carefully treading so as to make no mistakes. Yet we can still miss the point of the life God calls us to live. God knew we cannot live as He wants us to, without the power of the Spirit and love of Christ. Therefore, we have been given the gift of the Spirit.
