A Promise
April 18th, 2025
Acts 1:1-8
It must have been an exciting time for the disciples! Here was Jesus, risen from the dead just as He had said! The 40 days between the resurrection and Jesus’ ascension were filled with appearances by Jesus to His followers. These times were filled with instruction and fellowship, as Jesus prepared them for His ascension.
“In a few days,” He promised them, “you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” This was not the first time they had been given this promise. All the way back at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, John the Baptist had proclaimed that when Jesus came, He would “baptize with the Holy Spirit” (John 1:33). Now the fulfillment of this promise was imminent.
The promise of an “advocate” (14:15) to be with them is the same promise we have. We have a companion to walk this life with us. While Jesus was with His disciples, He taught them and ate with them and shared their joys and sorrows. Now that He has ascended again to heaven, we can thank God that He has not left us “orphans” (v. 18), but has sent His promised Spirit to share our journey.
