John 11:23-37
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire was a popular game show in the early 2000s. Contestants answered questions with the goal to win a million dollars. The more questions they answered, the harder the questions became. One feature of gameplay was when a question was too hard for contestants, they could call a “lifeline” for help. The lifeline gave the contestant a chance at continued life in the game.
Jesus had arrived and Martha confronted Him about her brother’s death (v. 20). Jesus said Lazarus would rise again (physically), but she thought He meant eternally at the last days. Jesus responded further, saying, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (vv. 25-26).
All of us, like Lazarus, will eventually experience physical death. However, death—both spiritually and physically—does not have the final say. The life Jesus offers means spiritual life now; that is, an abundant life with God’s active presence in our lives.
