The Power Within

April 5th, 2025

Ephesians 5:1-10

Many of us as children heard a story about George Washington, the first president of the United States, chopping down a cherry tree, but being unable to lie to his father about having done the deed. Perhaps the greatest irony of the story is that none of it was true. It was a myth created by an overzealous biographer.

Today, when we read a provoking story online or hear a tale told, our first instinct should not be outrage, anger, fear, or mistrust, but it should be a call to check the source and verify the authenticity of the report. The enemy would like nothing better than to embarrass us by having us support a half-truth or complete lie, particularly if it is related to our Christian faith.

Paul warns us against the antichrists: those who lie and deny Jesus as the Messiah. How do we discern the difference between the truth and a lie?

It is the Holy Spirit who teaches the heart of humankind; it is the Holy Spirit who gives true knowledge that protects us from the lies of the enemy.

The scripture is incorrect. It should be 1 John 2:18-27.
