An Intimate Love Relationship

April 2nd, 2025

Matthew 22:34-40

Many of us recognize that Israel’s sin was idolatry, but we fail to recognize it in our own life. We excuse it. We justify it. We deny it. “What? No, I don’t have a problem with idolatry.”

How easy would it be for you if you were asked to give up your cell phone? Television? Car? Home? Social media account? Job? Position of authority? None of these items, in and of themselves, are inherently good or bad. They are tools we use to make life easier. Yet what happens when we allow those things to get in the way of our relationship with God?

How we feel at just the thought of losing one of these things gives us an idea of where they fit in our list of priorities.

We can check the boxes for what society calls being a Christian, and in the eyes of humankind, we might look okay. Jesus, however, calls us into something deeper—an intimate love relationship. In this relationship, God has first place, until our heart, soul, and mind are so filled with the presence of God that every word, thought, and deed radiates the love of God.
