Vested Interest

March 18th, 2025

John 10:11-21

Vested interest. That’s one way to describe a good shepherd. The shepherd has known the sheep, many from birth, and some from exchanges in the market place. Vested interest means attention to every detail; from safety, to satisfying pastures. The contrast between the good shepherd and the hired hand could not have been more dramatic.

The “hired hand,” when danger arises from the circling of the wolves, runs in the other direction. The Good Shepherd runs to protect the flock. He is attentive to the weak, patient with the young, empathetic toward the older sheep.

This prompts a question: Who is helping you do soul-care in your life? We can do much with the numerous resources available. With whom do you share a spiritual connection that enriches your own soul-care? We all benefit from those relationships where someone comes alongside us, manifesting the presence of the Good Shepherd.

We who were not of that original sheep pen take great delight in knowing that the Good Shepherd included us in His flock when He laid down His life on the cross.
