Light Purifies

March 15th, 2025

1 John 1:1-10

As a child, darkness was not my friend. I had a childish fear of ghosts, and, of course, ghosts appear in the dark. I slept with my head covered to protect myself from seeing a ghost!

Spiritual darkness, however, is no childish fear. Spiritual darkness traps people in sin. In 1 John 1:6, there is a warning: “If we claim to have fellowship with [God] and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.” Self-deception is a soul-destroying practice. We should never close our eyes to the truth shown to us.

The good news is that Jesus, the Light of the World, has come. He has paid the price to deliver us from the darkness of sin. We can now, by God’s power of salvation, walk in the light. Walking in the light brings us into fellowship with God and other believers.

The blood of Jesus is effective to cleanse us from all sin and to fit us for eternal life. It is a continuous process. As we walk in the light, we are purified from all sin.
