God Is Love

1 John 4:7-16
I love the beauty and simplicity of teaching a song to children to help them know who God is and what God’s character is like. In just a few minutes, sometimes including some hand motions or body movement, the child has memorized a powerful truth.
As a child, I learned to sing 1 John 4:7-8 from memory. Even now, the words and the tune flow effortlessly from my lips. Learning a simple song implanted a powerful truth in my heart and mind: We should love one another because love comes from God.
If we do not love, then we don’t truly know God because God is love. Let us love one another. True love for one another—putting another’s needs above our own, demonstrating love for the poor, marginalized, and outcast—that kind of love comes only from God.
God loves us so much that the very least we can do is reflect His love to those around us. Loving one another is the evidence that God dwells within us. If we live in God, then we will also live in love.
