Aromatic Kryptonite

February 26th, 2025

John 6:44-59

Everyone has a weakness. For many, certain smells induce drool responses. Some of those smells come from the fresh-baked masterpieces of pastry ovens. They could be cookies, cakes, pies, cornbread, cinnamon rolls, or other forms of aromatic “Kryptonite.”

When Jesus told the confused congregation in Capernaum that He was “the bread of life,” some took Him literally. They thought He was promoting cannibalism. Obviously (to us), He was not. Jesus was simply using a mental image they would not soon forget.

Jesus knows eternal life isn’t easy or automatic. For us to remain alive forever, we would have to constantly focus on our relationship with Him. He chose eating bread, something His congregation did daily, to show them the picture of a healthy relationship they (and us) could have with Him.

What we consume becomes a part of who we are. Jesus wants us to be so intimate with Him that we become inseparable from Him, as inseparable as the Trinity. He wants to be part of who we are.
