Dwell In Safety

Psalm 4:1-8
As parents, Stefanie and her husband like to share with their children the various “safety measures” that were in place when they were children (so many years ago). For instance, they remember driving across a couple of states for visits to the grandparents when they did not have to buckle their seatbelts (unless they were coming up to a big busy city; then dad insisted they strap themselves in). Such travel seems bizarre and dangerous—especially as we now have vehicles that incessantly remind us to buckle up.
Despite being the chosen people of God, the Israelites were not strangers to danger. While some situations were the natural consequences of their own choices, we all know that we are not guaranteed safety in life. It is little wonder that the psalmist records the lament of the people (v. 6). When faced with distress, our natural inclination is to question, “Why me?” and “What do I do?”
The psalmist also records the answer: “Tremble and do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent.” (v. 4). Turn to the Lord. When in doubt, return to the Lord with silent, open hearts, waiting on Him.
