Psalm 27:4-9

Psalm 27 became more meaningful this year at Lynda’s 58-year-old son’s memorial service. King David began Psalm 27 with praise. She could join that knowing Steven was with God. However, soon David turned to seeking—wanting to know more. He knew God’s faithfulness with blessings, protection, and security. He had known God’s acceptance and guidance. He had past help as reference points for the future. However, even David, in the midst of it all, sometimes felt God did not hear him.

David sought one thing of the Lord. He desired to live in the tabernacle—the house of the Lord, His temple, His dwelling—surrounded every day by God’s presence. David realized the fullness of God is revealed to those who seek His face. Jesus said, “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33).

What does it mean for you to seek God first? Are there things in your life competing for first place?

Psalm 27 ends with “Wait for the LORD (v. 14). After seeking comes waiting.
