John 14:5-14
I deeply sympathize with Phillip in John 14 because I can identify with his longing: “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us” (v. 8). It wasn’t too long ago I prayed, “Lord, just show yourself.”
What Phillip had to learn, and I am still learning, is that God has already revealed himself. In Philip’s case, God was standing before Him in human flesh, God incarnate. Philip wanted to see the Father, but in the mystery of the Triune God, the Father was standing before him in Jesus.
In my case, God has already revealed himself as well. Jesus Christ, the incarnate one, the complete revelation of God in human flesh, has already appeared to us.
A better prayer for Philip and us is to pray, “Lord, help me to see how you are already present in this situation.” The prevenient grace of God is already ahead of us, working in each situation. Let us respond in faith and open our eyes to the presence of God already existing in our situations.
