God’s Healing

Malachi 4:1-6

It’s never fun to be sick, even if it means skipping school. I recall my boyhood days when I would be absent from class due to illness. Sometimes, it meant a trip to the doctor; other times, it was just being homebound to take medicine, keeping distance from other kids, and just waiting it out. However, I also remember my mother sending me outside to sit on the front steps in the sunshine. She would tell me the sun was healing.

The prophet Malachi describes the coming judgment for the wicked on the day of the Lord. This fiery judgment will leave nothing alive, not a root or branch remaining.

This same day, however, will be quite the contrast for the Christian. The experience is likened to the brightness of the sun for the people of God. This is the only place in Scripture where the phrase “the sun of righteousness” is found. “Healing in its rays” refers to the power of God’s holiness.

Just as good ol’ vitamin D is healthy to a little boy sitting on the front steps, the presence of Almighty God will restore and renew those who have chosen to follow Him.
