I Can Explain
December 7th, 2024
Acts 2:14-22
Most of us, at one time or another, have had to explain something to someone else. One way children are taught to do this is through writing “How To” compositions. Usually, it’s something simple that can be explained in simple, step-by-step instructions, using terms such as “first,” “next,” and “finally.” A well-written paper would equip the reader to complete the task described.
At Pentecost, Peter got up and did some explaining of his own. He had enjoyed a front-row seat while the greatest story ever told unfolded. He knew the good news of the gospel firsthand, and he had been charged by the Holy Spirit to share it with those who stopped by.
First, Peter implored the people to listen. Then he explained carefully that those with him were not drunk. Next, he shared Joel’s prophesy concerning the anointing of the Holy Spirt (2:28-32). Then, he shared the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection.
We as Christ-followers have a little explaining to do. Each of us has been filled with the Holy Spirit just as Peter was. We are called to share the good news just as Peter did.
