Full Circle Moments

December 5th, 2024

Luke 4:14-22

I love moments when things seem to come “full circle”—those moments when life events come to a place where they are made new, restored. Usually, these moments happen on God’s timing, not ours.

I feel like that’s what Luke is telling us in chapter 4. Jesus was in town, and He made His way to the temple. He stood before the congregation and read the words of Isaiah, words that spoke about one sent by God, who was anointed by the Holy Spirit. This individual would share good news with those of little means, declare freedom to those in captivity, give sight to the blind, and break the chains of oppression. The “Lord’s favor” would be proclaimed. Then, Jesus spoke the words that ushered in the “full circle” moment: “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21).

Not everyone realized it yet, but the wonderful individual the prophet spoke about was Jesus. Jesus came to this world to make all things new. Christ’s mission was restoration; His mission was accomplished on the cross.

Thank you. The definition of “full circle” as the place of newness and restoration led me into a deeper contemplation of Shalom.
