1 Corinthians 11:17-26
We humans have all sorts of ways to categorize and compartmentalize the people, places, information, and things that come across our paths. We group similar people or tasks or bits of knowledge together.
This categorization generally helps our brains sort through everything we experience and learn. Cataloging, while helpful, can make us limited and shortsighted. For instance, Paul addressed the Christians in Corinth and the divisions among them: “I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you” (v. 18). Some members were eating their own “private suppers,” which led to some members being “drunk” and others “hungry.” Paul points out that these “private suppers” members had homes to go eat in, unlike other members who had “nothing” (v. 22). The social and economic divisions of the world continued into the church.
This division was not merely an uncomfortable social situation. Paul bluntly told the church, “When you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat” (v. 20). Ouch.
What divisions have crept into your heart, life, and church?
