Our Unique Celebrations
November 20th, 2024
Exodus 12:1-11
As autumn continues the journey toward winter, a variety of holidays and celebrations show up on our calendar and in our homes. We all have our own unique imprints on our celebrations. Perhaps the celebration of Thanksgiving includes invitations to foreign exchange students to the special meal. Celebrations are our reminders of past events, achievements, and special relationships.
The Israelites likely did not understand just how significant this occasion was, but it was the first of many celebrations recognizing the mercy of God. Exodus records the very specific preparations—who was invited, what was to be served, how to decorate, and even the length of the celebration.
The first “Pass Over” observance was meant to be reenacted each year, to remember the awesome mercy of God, who freed the enslaved people who had cried out to God. Each time the people of Israel celebrated this event, they would be reminded of God’s mercy and how they were to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.
