Love and Wisdom

Philippians 1:1-11
Paul’s prayer for the Philippians might very well be our very own prayer for our children, friends, family, students, or loved ones: that they may grow in love and in wisdom. Paul puts these two things hand-in-hand as he prays for his friends: that their love for others would flourish, and they would grow in knowledge and insight.
Love to care for others well, to selflessly lay down your life for others, sense the needs of those around you, and seek to fill them. Knowledge to know what is appropriate, to make wise decisions, and to discern what is best. These two characteristics together work to form and shape a person who embodies the nature and character of Christ. Love without knowledge or depth creates shallow relationships that lack sincerity. Knowledge without love leads to contractual sorts of relationships.
Take a few moments to pray for someone in your life. Pray that the Lord will continue to do this good work in you, so that you, too, may be “pure and blameless for the day of Christ” (v. 10).
