Humility Honored

Proverbs 22:1-9
Reputations are a funny thing. Depending on how someone knows us or in what context they know us, they might have a vastly different idea about who we are as a person. These vastly different opinions might even be true, depending on the context we find ourselves in.
It’s interesting and seemingly a bit counterintuitive that a proverb stressing the importance of “a good name” (v. 1) is so close to a proverb saying that “humility is the fear of the LORD” (v. 4). As a modern person, I want to ask, “Which one is it?”
If reputations are a funny thing, humility might be an even funnier thing. Humility is the most elusive of traits—as soon as one thinks they’ve found it, they’ve lost it. Think about it. Can anyone rightly say, “I’m humble”? No, as soon as we declare it, it’s gone.
In part, we have to recognize that humility and esteem are not mutually exclusive. In fact, the opposite is true. Seek humility and watch how the esteem others have for you grows.
