As Obedient Children

Ephesians 6:1-8
Paul pointed out in Ephesian 6: 2 that the commandment to honor our father and mother was the first of the Ten Commandments that contained a promise: “So that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth” (v. 3).
Before becoming a parent, I used to joke about this particular commandment. I would say that the fifth commandment was to “humor your father and mother.” You probably wouldn’t be surprised to find out that my parents never found that particular joke funny. Now that I have three children, I don’t think it’s that funny either. I appreciate the honor my children show us when they obey my wife and me.
In verses 5-8, Paul points out that we also show honor in our obedience to those with authority over us in the workplace as well. No matter whether those with authority over us are honorable or dishonorable, we are to be obedient as though we are serving the Lord because obedience is honorable. Even if our obedience isn’t rewarded in this life, we can trust that God notices our honorable obedience and will reward us for it.
