A Community Response
September 28th, 2024
Isaiah 30:15-21
There is perhaps no better indication of who a person really is than how they react under adversity. Real adversity, real stress, can bring out the true character of a person, and for people of faith, adversity can also reveal what they truly believe about God’s character. The same is also true for communities of people of faith.
Where do we run when we need help? When Peter was arrested by Herod and kept in prison with a sentence of execution, the Jerusalem church could have scattered, lost and afraid, much as they did before when Jesus was arrested. However, this time, as a Spirit-led and inspired people, the church gathered and did what had become their default response: They prayed!
Praying in earnest and in faith that God would be with Peter was their response. Our default response to the pressures of life must also be shaped out of heart habits that are in line with God’s desires for us: earnest prayer and faith!
