Cool Under Pressure

September 25th, 2024

Daniel 6:16-22

After being brought up on charges by his opponents, Daniel’s response to the situation was not noteworthy because of the brilliant defense he mounted before the king, or the eloquent speech he gave about God’s law before the verdict was revealed. Instead, the text tells us that Daniel did not speak a single word before being thrown into the lions’ den. The king uttered a half-hearted appeal to God on Daniel’s behalf (v. 16), but our hero remained silent.

Silent, that is, until the morning came. Daniel knew that God had responded to the faithful life of his servant, and had shut the mouths of the lions. Where there was doubt and fear in the heart of the king, who could neither eat nor sleep with the anxiety of the moment, Daniel remained calm in the knowledge of the God who saves and responds to our prayers.

If only our own confidence in God would bring us to such composure under pressure! Daniel’s consistency in his own prayer life and complete trust in God mirrored God’s faithful presence; do our habits reflect God’s character in the same way?
