Two Great Assurances
September 13th, 2024
Psalm 23:1-6
In July 2023, Peggy Jones was mowing a lawn in Texas when a snake fell from the sky and twisted itself around her arm. Moments later, a hawk swooped to recapture the snake, attacking Mrs. Jones in the process.
Even after reading the harrowing accounts of Mrs. Jones’s plight, it’s unlikely that a snake falling from the sky will make our top 10 “fear list.” Few of us live a fearless life.
David faced many fearful situations in his life, but still he proclaimed: “I fear no evil, for you are with me” (Psalm 23:4). God is with us. God does not insulate those He loves from the difficulties of life but will give us the courage we need to face whatever He permits to come our way.
In her book, Dear Heart, Come Home, Joyce Rupp tells of the two great assurances of Scripture: “Do not fear” and “I am with you.” She says, “I find great comfort in these assurances and clutch them to my empty heart when times are tough.”
