Psalm 98:1-6
My oldest child participates in marching band, playing percussion in what is called the “pit” or auxiliary percussion. Practicing technique, learning the correct notes, and knowing where to be (if you’re marching on the field) is of utmost importance.
You can be technically correct in all these and still not have the best performance. You have to “sell” the show. You have to feel the music. Play the music. Help the audience feel the music also.
I think the psalmist knew this when he penned Psalm 98. It’s one thing to know the right words, correct actions, and suitable look of Christ-followers. It’s another thing to live that to the very core of who you are.
We are to “sing a new song” and “shout for joy” (vv. 1, 4). Our lives are to be permeated with the goodness and faithfulness of God to the point that we help those around us “feel” God’s goodness and faithfulness too. Our joy in response to God’s goodness is to be saturating our lives, overflowing, and soaking in those around us.
