Remembering Jesus

1 Corinthians 11:23-27
In her excellent book, The Crucifixion, Fleming Rutledge points out that remembering is not merely an act of recounting an event. When we ask people to remember us in our prayers, we are asking them to pray for us. When the Israelites asked God to remember them, they were pleading that God intervene on their behalf. What about when we receive the Lord’s Supper? What did Jesus mean when He said, “Do this in remembrance of me?” (Luke 22:19).
In actuality, there are several answers to that question. One of the more creative answers is that in communion we are remembering the body of Christ. Each member of the body is coming back and reassembling. Yet another is that the command to “remember” is a command to obey Christ.
We are not called to think fondly or remorsefully about Jesus, Jesus calls us to be like Him. We remember Jesus well when we imitate Him. The best way we can imitate Christ is by loving as He loved.
