The One Who Watches Over Us
December 29th, 2023
Psalm 121:1-8
I am the father of three children, the oldest of which is now a full-blown high school teenager. As our children grow up, sometimes I will peek my head in their rooms at night after they’ve gone to sleep. I marvel at their talent and am deeply thankful for their health. I pray for them in the watches of the night, asking God every single day to show himself to them, guide them, and form them into faithful people. I am regularly blown away at the awesome opportunity I have to be their dad . . .
. . . and then I read Psalm 121. I read about the God who created the entire universe watching over us. I read about the Lord taking notice of our coming and going. I ponder for a few minutes what it might mean that the Lord does not slumber or sleep; that there is no break in God’s watch-care. I think about the love that goes to my very heart when I watch over my own children, and I consider the love of God that runs infinitely deeper as He keeps watch over His children . . .
. . . and I too will sleep better tonight, knowing the Lord who created me is keeping watch.
