The Third Person

Acts 1:1-11
I once received a drawing from one of the kids I pastored and it said, “I love God and Jesus.” I loved and appreciated the drawing, but it also reminded me that the Holy Spirit sometimes is left out because the third person of the Trinity is hard to grasp.
The Holy Spirit is one of the three persons of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit is not some life force, but a person of the three-in-one with whom we have relationship. The Holy Spirit is not a force that we call upon in order to be more effective in bringing about God’s kingdom. We are to cultivate a relationship with the Holy Sprit.
The passage on the fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians comes to mind here. The fruit of the Spirit are not given as a list of objectives to work on or achieve by Paul to the Galatians (5:22-23). The only instruction given in the passage is to “walk by the Spirit” (v. 16). This means that the empowering of the Spirit comes from cultivating a deep relationship with the Spirit.
