Hebrews 13:1-8
I received my Associate of Arts degree in social welfare but never pushed on for a four-year degree. Yet I later served as a caseworker for the Salvation Army. The job demanded a balance of toughness and Christian love. The passage in Hebrews 13 covers an everyday Christian response: “Keep on loving one another” (v. 1).
When I was attending the university studying social work, we were required to be interviewed in one of the courses. I responded to a battery of questions and awaited the response. The committee met with me to deliver the hard news: “You are too empathetic! We feel it will be difficult for you to separate from your work.”
In Hebrews 13, we understand the part that empathy plays in our Christian walk: “Keep on loving one another” (v. 1). Paul instructs the reader to do these actions “as if you yourselves were suffering” (v. 3). Our empathy is strength in Christian service and fellowship.
Keep on loving, brothers and sisters. You could be entertaining unexpected angels. It covers strangers, prisoners, and the relationships we have in life.

The empathy of our Lord Jesus is not the world’s as found in universities. It is bearing one another’s burdens and so fulfilling the love our great King. Keep it up sister. A very good message today!
