The Worship Wars
April 22nd, 2023
John 4:19-26
When it came to worship the Samaritans disagreed with the Jews, particularly over the location. Both groups followed the Law of Moses. Both revered the Torah, the first five books of the Bible, as the basis of their faith. Both used the same name for God, claimed descent from Abraham, and observed the same holy days and rituals. Both were waiting for the appearance of the Messiah. Still, they despised one another.
Jesus refused to get dragged into the conflict (4:21). The location of worship will ultimately be of no significance. Instead, “a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks” (4:23).
When it comes to worship God is not concerned about whether the music is contemporary or traditional, the prayers are written or spontaneous, and the scripture translation used is 400 years old or 40. He is concerned about whether those who worship are moved by His Holy Spirit and proclaim His divine truth.
