Sin And Shame

2 Samuel 11:10-17
David had sinned by having relationship with Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife, while Uriah was off fighting David’s war. Then Bathsheba told David she was pregnant. David was in a tight spot. He had sinned, and soon it would become clear to everyone exactly what David had done. David tried to obscure the truth by sending Uriah home for a couple of nights, but Uriah refused to go to his house while his friends were still fighting. Then David had Uriah killed.
When we sin in a way that will be noticed in public, we often try to cover it up by lying or telling half-truths. When that doesn’t work, we may very well try to find ways to prevent others from speaking the truth.
Sin and shame steers us down a dangerous road, requiring more and more sin to keep our initial sin concealed. Repenting and receiving God’s grace requires us to tell hard truths about ourselves and our sin. Repentance, however, is the only way out of the holes of sin that we dig for ourselves.
