Hardships Do Come

Exodus 1:1-11
One of the questions people ask me a lot is: “Why do bad things happen to good people?” There is a misunderstanding of the Bible. For some reason, we have taken verses that promise provision to mean nothing bad will ever happen to us as long as we follow God. This is not the case. The Hebrews were where they were supposed to be and following God’s will. We forget that God also gives people free will. The new Pharaoh, however, does not remember how Joseph had saved Egypt. Instead of living in peace, he chooses to oppress the people of God.
Often, when hardship happens, we blame the sufferer or think they must have done something wrong. Sometimes bad things just happen; it has nothing to do with the faith, or lack of faith, of the person.
Later in Exodus, the people of God continue to be faithful in the midst of their suffering and bring it before God. In this moment, God hears their cries and brings to them a hero, Moses. When times are hard, let us remember to cry out to the One who saves and trust that He will do it.
