Tithing What Is God’s
August 21st, 2022
Malachi 3:6-12
Growing up, whenever I received any money, my parents had me practice tithing. Ten percent went to savings and ten percent went to the church, often dropped into my alabaster box to sit on the altar on Sunday. To me as a child, it never made much sense. That money belonged to me! Why should I give it away to God?
Even as an adult, tithing is hard sometimes. It often requires trust and a faith that God will provide. Of course, this is part of the reason we are asked to give—so that we can practice relying on God’s strength instead of our own. In Malachi 3:10, God promises abundance upon Israel if they are faithful in their giving. At the time, Israel had been lacking in tithing what was God’s and God had withheld the fullness of His blessing as a result. Still, He promises to give it anew if people listen.
What are we holding back from God, intentionally or unintentionally? Are there things in our lives that belong to Him that we need to rededicate? God is ever urging us to listen so that He can bless us abundantly.
